Question: "What exactly is a 'holy kiss'?"

There are four places in the New Testament that refer to the “holy kiss”—Romans 16:16; 1 Corinthians 16:20; 2 Corinthians 13:12; and 1 Thessalonians 5:26. In each instance, the Greek words denote a kiss which is sacred—physically pure and morally blameless. It was a common custom in most nations for people to kiss each other at meeting or parting to display their love, sincere affection, and friendship for each other. The kiss is called "holy" to distinguish it from a sexual one and from a hypocritical and deceitful one, such as Joab gave to Amasa (2 Samuel 20:9) or such as Judas gave to Jesus when he cried, “Hail Rabbi,” and betrayed Him into the hands of His enemies (Matthew 26:49).

In New Testament times, the holy kiss was a sign of greeting, much like the modern handshake. For Christians, it further expressed brotherly love and unity. The holy kiss was especially precious to the new believers during the early church years, because they were often outcasts from their own families because of their new faith. These new believers gloried in the new spiritual kinship they had found among other Christians. Furthermore, the holy kiss from a Jewish Christian to a Gentile believer was evidence that the Gentiles were accepted fully into Christian fellowship, despite the teachings of the Judaizers, those who would return to the Mosaic law as their source of justification. So prominent were these false teachers in the early church that they even temporarily drew such a prominent Christian as Peter into their web of deceit (Galatians 2:11-13). The holy kiss between the Jewish and Gentile believers was done righteously in recognition that all believers are brothers and sisters in the family of God.

Whether or not the holy kiss should be a tradition we carry on today is not clear in Scripture. Whether or not our salutations to our brothers and sisters in Christ include the holy kiss, the important thing is that our greetings spring from real love and friendship, be characterized by sincerity, and represent true Christian fellowship. Nah, I personally am not buying it... Its a reasonable composition, and almost true in a sense, but notice how they or Paul differentiate between a real kiss and this so called greeting of a 'holy kiss'. This as if a sexual, on the lips kiss is unspiritual and unholy. No, a kiss on the cheek is much shallower than a kiss on the lips and no where near as personal and intimate. Its like playing the game and seeming to be united when they weren't. But Early Christian's surely kissed on the lips. Their lives were on the line, and they totally believed and trusted in one another. They believed in equality, and brotherhood, as Jesus had shown them by His Own Personal example

wanted them to do. So was not their holy kisses and love feasts, more than shallow pretense kissing on the brethren's cheeks.

I remember going to M****** from the mission field and being given a so called holy kiss from a couple of the sisters there, upon entry. It was cold and heartless and they were then off, to rest up before their nights on the town where they would give real kisses to prospective brethren or rich men. To the poor missionaries like myself who had given all their inheritances in following the Lord, they gave pecks on the cheeks, to the rich heathen, they gave all.

They failed even if they gained some temporary riches, it became a con and they paid for it later, as their love died completely because of their lack of love.

I remember being in a Canadian church, years later, and they started circling through the seats in the church meeting, pretending to do a KING DAVID DANCE to show their zeal for the Lord. It didn't work, but they went through the motions, and thought that was all there was to do it. This even though, David stripped down to nothingness in his escasty, for the Lord. Their performance just fell short... and they dis-integrated a few months later.

A holy kiss, in my opinion, was just a show, a performance, a type of mutual display implied by the church system of Paul to pretend to be the authentic church. But Paul brought the church down by bringing them back into the law and into self righteous holiness.

Whereas real kisses and real love from real Christians in the catacombs below was winning real disciples with real independence and trust in the real LORD. These were following the real example and real teacher Jesus, who taught them how to show real LOVE, even real PHYSICAL LOVE.

Forget the common place, holy kisses on the cheeks, They're no different than a handshake. We wont be given a handshake as we enter HEAVEN.
